Scott Akkermans grew up in Hanna, Alberta, and relocated to Coalhurst in 2020 after he spent considerable time working in both Calgary and Edmonton. Scott studied Mechanical Engineering Technology at the Southern Alberta Institute for Technology (SAIT) before he began his career in the oil and gas industry. His work on the well sites provided opportunities to travel across the province and as far as Roma, Australia. Currently, he works remotely doing drafting and design for an instrumentation manufacturer in Edmonton.
The birth of their son, Henry, prompted Scott and his wife, Natalie, to consider moving to Southern Alberta to be closer to Natalie’s family. After taking a trip to Coalhurst to look for a home, they knew this was the place they wanted to set roots and made the move in the middle of the pandemic.
After living in Coalhurst for a few months, Scott found that he was enjoying the community and saw an opportunity to bring a fresh perspective to initiate positive change by running for Town Council. Scott values collaboration and has a desire to connect with residents to have discussions that will lead to a better Coalhurst, not only for his family, but the entire community.
Outside of work you’ll likely find Scott playing a board game with family and friends, trying to better his score on the disc golf course, hiking up a mountain, sneaking out to go fishing at Park Lake, or heading out on family adventures to explore this corner of the province.
