The Town of Coalhurst maintains approximately 30 km of paved road, 21 km of sidewalk, and 3 km of asphalt pathways. Key road maintenance activities throughout the year include:
- Snow and ice control: ensures roads and trails are safe during winter months
- Street signage maintenance: keeps road signs in proper condition
- Spring street sweeping: maintains clean and debris-free roads (contracted service)
- Boulevard and ditch maintenance: keeps roadside areas clear and well-maintained
- Road markings: updates lane markings for clear traffic flow
- Capital upgrades: implements street improvements and sidewalk repairs as required and as funding is available
SNOW AND ICE CONTROL
When required, snow plowing is done on main arteries, major intersections and school zones to keep traffic moving safely through town. Sanding is also done at intersections, with priority given to major intersections, school zones, and sloping streets. Alley plowing is done when required, following the clearing of main arteries, major intersections, school zones, and secondary intersections and roadways.
Within 48 hours of a new snowfall, sidewalks adjacent to municipal buildings and town pathways are cleared by Town staff in the following order of priority:
- Coalhurst Fire Hall
- Town Office
- Coalhurst Community Centre
- Other parks and recreation areas
All sidewalks adjacent to residences and businesses are the responsibility of each property owner to also be cleared within 48 hours of a new snowfall (per Traffic Bylaw 398-18).
During the winter months, the Town provides sand, free of charge, that can be used for traction on sidewalks. There are four locations with sand boxes that can accessed by residents or business operators any time:
- Coalhurst Esso (201 51st Avenue)
- Coalhurst recycling depot (702 55th Avenue)
- Imperial Meadows Park (613 Spruce Drive)
- The south end of Sundance subdivision
