The Town of Coalhurst is proud to announce Arlene Purcell as Honorary Parade Marshal for the 2024 Miners Days Parade. Purcell is a retired language arts and drama teacher from Coalhurst High School.
As part of her dedication to the arts and the community of Coalhurst, Purcell wrote a three-act stage play called Firedamp, which was first performed by an all-student cast in 1998. In the spring of 1999, an article about the play was published in Alberta Views magazine. The play tells the story of the Coalhurst mine disaster of 1935, when 16 men’s lives were lost in an explosion at the Imperial Mine.
“Council is pleased to name Ms. Purcell as this year’s Parade Marshal,” said Mayor Lyndsay Montina. “In addition to her work at the high school, she has been very involved in our community over the years, including assisting with local Remembrance Day ceremonies. The way she respects and honours our town’s past, present and future is nothing short of remarkable. She has touched the lives of many students and residents over the years and has left a lasting legacy on Coalhurst.”
Everyone is encouraged to join us for the Miners Days Parade on Saturday, July 27 at 10:30 a.m. to congratulate Purcell as she helps lead the procession.
The parade will begin at the corner of 55th Avenue and 6th Street, traveling south toward 51st Avenue (Main Street). It will then proceed down 51st Avenue before turning north onto 2nd Street, and then return to 55th Avenue. A map of the route is available below.
Prior to the parade, residents and visitors are also invited to join us for the annual Town Council Pancake Breakfast, happening from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. at the Coalhurst Community Centre.
For those interested in entering a float in the parade, registrations are still being accepted. Entry is free of charge and the registration form, rules, and regulations are available at this link.
