Environment Canada is forecasting daytime temperatures in mid- to high-30 degrees Celsius range and overnight lows in the mid- to high-teens for the next several days. In response to the extreme heat and better than expected drought conditions for the region, the Town is adjusting its operating hours of the Coalhurst spray park.
The spray park will now be open between 10:00 AM and 8:00 PM daily, weather permitting.
The Town continues to monitor the southern Alberta drought conditions closely and will make adjustments to its operations, as necessary. At this time, there are no mandatory water restrictions in place for Coalhurst.
For those who do head outdoors for any length of time, you are encouraged to take precautions to protect yourself and those you are with, particularly vulnerable persons including seniors, children, and people with underlying health conditions. Alberta Health Services offers a number of tips to remain safe in heat:
- Apply a sunscreen of at least sun protection factor (SPF) 30, at least 20 minutes before heading outdoors. Be sure the SPF 30 screens out both UVA and UVB rays, and reapply frequently (as directed on product label).
- Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses (with a UVA/UVB CSA certified seal).
- Wear light-coloured long-sleeved shirts and pants that cover skin.
- Consider rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day.
- Drink plenty of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated.
- Take frequent breaks from heat, spending time indoors.
- Do not leave any person or pet inside a closed vehicle, ever.
