The Constructed Wetland Project will improve storm water infrastructure and functions in the Town of Coalhurst. In 2017, the Town had a Storm Water Management Plan produced by an engineering firm. The Management Plan identified six areas where improvements could be made for dealing with current needs as well as the needs of the Town going into the future.
In 2020, the Storm Outfall Upgrades Project was completed. This replaced the existing outfall line that carries storm water from Coalhurst to the Oldman River. The new outfall line has much greater capacity.
In later Spring 2022, construction on the Constructed Wetland – Main Facility (southern portion) and Lafarge Facility (northern portion) began. The project site for these is on the west side of Range Road 223 between 45th and 55th Avenues. While the southern portion will be a new facility, the northern portion will upgrade an existing facility.
All projects thus far have received Provincial and Federal Grants to complete the work.
Finishing & Landscaping
Main construction is expected to be completed mid-Autumn 2022. All disturbed areas and stockpiles (mounds of excavated earth) will see topsoil placement, seeding, and hydro mulch occurring. This will prevent erosion and foster revegetation. Further landscaping will occur in Spring 2023, the details of which have not been finalized.
The Town intends to install a paved walking path around the Main Facility (southern portion) connecting with Spruce Drive. In the future, the Town will hold Open Houses to hear from residents regarding other recreation initiatives they would like to see in the area. No decisions have been made at this point beyond the paved walking path.
Storm Water Projects in the Future
The remaining proposed projects from Table 2.3 are not actively in the Town’s Capital Plans due to lack of funding. As funding or grants become available, the Town will pursue opportunities that may arise.
